Smoke detectors are hardwired into your electrical system but have battery backups to take over it the power is interrupted. The batteries may emit a chirping noise if they need to be replaced but it is best to test the batteries at least twice each year and change them as needed. A good rule of thumb is to check the batteries when you change your clocks for daylight saving time.
