2017 Atlantic hurricane season is far from over; US remains at risk for additional strikes. Additional hurricanes, beyond that of Jose and Maria, are like over the Atlantic and may threaten the US for the rest of the 2017 season. Hurricane season runs through the end of November and it is possible the Atlantic may continue to produce the tropical storms right up to the wire. As of Sept. 18, there have been four named systems that made landfall in the US as category 4 hurricanes.

Peak of hurricane season is NOW

Although the Atlantic hurricane season officially began on June 1st, we're now entering the "season within the season" - a roughly eight-week period that is often the most active and dangerous time for tropical cyclone activity. One thing that doesn't change as we move into and out of the peak of season is the need to be vigilant and prepared. Because it doesn't matter whether activity levels are high or low - it only takes one storm to make it a bad year for you. Contact Us!

Hurricane Service Program

Gardens Home Management Services is helping our homeowners prepare their homes for season! If your home is in need of any of the below services, please feel free to contact us. Prepare For Season: Pressure Washing, Professional House Cleaning, Carpet Cleaning, Window Washing, Handyman Repairs, Much, Much More! Contact Us!

Is Your ROOF Prepared?

Although your roof may not be leaking, roof inspections are important to ward off potential problems. Our roof inspections consist of checking for: Loose Tiles, Caulking Around Chimney, Gaps or Openings, Gutter Repairs & Cleaning, Exterior check only, Contact Us!

Schedule an A/C Check

We continue to experience extreme, record-setting summer heat, which means we're all using more energy to keep our homes cool. Because A/C units run twice as long in the summer than during cooler months and account for more than half of your energy bill, you likely will notice your summer bills are higher than normal. .Is your electric bill higher than normal? Schedule an A/C check up with us and make sure your air conditioning unit is running efficiently.

Do you have a plan?

Creating an emergency plan is a great start in making sure your family is ready and knows what to do during a disaster. Think about some of these questions... Where would you evacuate to? Who would you call? Where are the safe areas? Is your home in a flood zone? We also suggest you stock enough supplies in a disaster kit to last each person in your family at least 3 days. Your kit should contain items like: water, non-perishable foods, a radio, flashlight, batteries, first aide kit, cash, important documents and toiletries, just to name a few.

Florida Stormy Season Tips

A Generator is a great back up plan in case of a power outage. When there is a power outage due to a bad storm, losing power is a major inconvenience. Without a back up generator, losing power can cost you a lot of money. The inconvenience of lost food, mold formation, and working to dry out your house can all be prevented with the installation of a generator. Contact Us!

Hurricane tree trimming

During hurricane season, it is important to trim your trees. However, over-pruning palms with the "Hurricane Cut" removes nutrients, especially potassium, which keeps palms green and thriving. So never cut off green leaves! The more you cut, the more browning you will cause as the palm tries to absorb the lost potassium from fewer fronds. Eventually your palm will die. Contact Us!

Even areas well away from the coastline can be threatened by dangerous flooding, destructive winds and tornadoes from these storms. Normally, you can hear thunder up to 10 miles from the lightning that makes it. Since light travels at 186,000 miles per second, you see the lightning the instant it flashes. But sound travels about a mile in five seconds (near the ground). If 15 seconds elapse between seeing a lightning bolt and hearing its thunder, the lightning was about three miles away.

Hurricane Season 2016

The 2016 hurricane season accomplished something last Tuesday - the Atlantic basin had not seen since 2013 when it produced an "L"-named storm that catapulted the tropical cyclone tally for the year to average. Tropical Storm Lisa, the 12th named storm of the year, spun up from a tropical depression 430 miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands, making pre-season predictions of a climatologically normal to slightly-above normal year more tangible.

Thank you for being a loyal customer and if there is anything you need, please do not hesitate to contact us.

The Peak of Hurricane Season is Now

Although the Atlantic hurricane season officially began on June 1st, we're now entering the "season within the season" - a roughly eight-week period that is often the most active and dangerous time for tropical cyclone activity. Why does this peak period of activity begin so deep into summer? There certainly is no lack of disturbances throughout the entire six-month hurricane season. Tropical waves are coming off of the coast of Africa roughly every three days, and the very early and late parts of the year provide additional types of potential seedlings. What's different, though, is the environment that these potential tropical cyclones tend to encounter. Both dynamics (wind factors) and thermodynamics (temperature and moisture) play a role. One thing that doesn't change as we move into and out of the peak of season is the need to be vigilant and prepared. Because it doesn't matter whether activity levels are high or low - it only takes one storm to make it a bad year for you.

RAIN RAIN RAIN - Is Your Roof Prepared?

South Florida's rainy season brings with it both good and not-so-good elements, and we have to prepare our homes for both. As you may have noticed, we have received a lot of rain. Throughout this timeframe, South Florida normally receives 26.78 inches - that's 70 percent of an entire year's rainfall! Although your roof may not be leaking, roof inspections are important to ward off potential problems.

Zika Virus: What We Know

The first case of locally-acquired Zika virus has arrived in Palm Beach County. Zika is spread mostly by the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito (Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus). These mosquitoes are aggressive daytime biters. They can also bite at night. Zika can be passed from a pregnant woman to her fetus. Infection during pregnancy can cause certain birth defects. There is no vaccine or medicine for Zika. The Florida Department of Health has identified an area in one neighborhood of Miami where Zika is being spread by mosquitoes. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is urging people to take immediate steps to prevent mosquito bites, and ultimately infection: - Wear long sleeved shirt and long pants to cover skin - Use EPA-registed insect repellent - Treat clothing and gear with permethrin or purchase permethrin-treated items - Stay in places with air conditioning or that use window and door screens to keep mosquitos outside - Make sure all screens are in good working order - Eliminate sources of standing water in surrounding areas If you have any questions on how to protect yourself and your family, please refer to the information published by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) at www.cdc.gov/zika Contact Us

Record Heat Means High Bills

We continue to experience extreme, record-setting summer heat, which means we're all using more energy to keep our homes cool. Because A/C units run twice as long in the summer than during cooler months and account for more than half of your energy bill, you likely will notice your summer bills are higher than normal. Now is the time to take control of your energy use, because forecasters predict September to be another extremely hot month. You can save energy and money by increasing the temperature in your home. We recommend setting your thermostat to 78 degrees when you're home and 82 degrees when you leave. With every degree you increase, you can save about 5% on your monthly cooling costs. Is your electric bill higher than normal? Schedule an A/C check up with us and make sure your air conditioning unit is running efficiently. .

Disaster Preparedness

From the Palm Beach County Disaster Recovery Coalition: The best way to address disaster recovery is to better address preparedness - be prepared to recover. Although there are a number of organizations supporting the distribution of food, water, and ice, the importance of stocking your own supplies is imperative. Start now, and the additional costs of purchasing shelf-staple food, batteries, and bottled water, will not seem nearly as costly.

Home Care Tips

The Backup Plan A Generator is a great back up plan in case of a power outage. When there is a power outage due to a bad storm, losing power is a major inconvenience. Without a back up generator, losing power can cost you a lot of money. The inconvenience of lost food, mold formation, and working to dry out your house can all be prevented with the installation of a generator. Surge Protection Power surges are extremely brief spikes in electrical power that burn up electrical circuits inside appliances and electronic equipment. The most damaging type of power surges enter the home through power lines, cable/satellite lines and/or telephone lines. These "externally generated" surges originate from the electric utility or lightning.

Pool Renovation

Doing swimming pool repairs yourself can be risky. The experts at GHMS provide exceptional pool repair services including installation, replacement and on-site repair for pool and spa equipment. Whether you need someone to check out your pumps, motor, filters, timers, jets, valves or any other piece of equipment - we can take a look and make the necessary repairs for you.

At Gardens Home Management, our handyman services can take care of your summer projects! From repairing your garbage disposal to installing your garage door keypad and everything in between. We take care of getting the supplies, assembling any necessary equipment and completing the repairs - all at a fair price.

Pruning Your Palm Trees For Hurricane Season

During hurricane season, it is important to trim your trees. However, over-pruning palms with the "Hurricane Cut" removes nutrients, especially potassium, which keeps palms green and thriving. So never cut off green leaves! The more you cut, the more browning you will cause as the palm tries to absorb the lost potassium from fewer fronds. Eventually your palm will die.

How are your preparing for 2016 hurricane season?

Creating an emergency plan is a great start in making sure your family is ready and knows what to do during a disaster. Think about some of these questions... Where would you evacuate to? Who would you call? Where are the safe and secure areas in your home? Is your home in a flood zone? We also suggest you stock enough supplies in a disaster kit to last each person in your family at least 3 days. Your kit should contain items like: water, non-perishable foods, a radio, flashlight, batteries, first aide kit, cash, important documents and toiletries, just to name a few.

GHMS Is Ready

With June 1st right around the corner, we are gearing up for the dreaded Hurricane Season. All of our licensed contractors are on standby and are aware of our commitment to you and your home. A major hurricane is one that is Category 3 or stronger on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

National Hurricane Preparedness Tips

Tropical cyclones are among nature's most powerful and destructive phenomena. If you live in an area prone to tropical cyclones, you need to be prepared. Even areas well away from the coastline can be threatened by dangerous flooding, destructive winds and tornadoes from these storms. The National Hurricane Center and the Central Pacific Hurricane Center issue watches, warnings, forecasts, and analyses of hazardous tropical weather. Hurricane Preparedness Week (May 15-21, 2016) is your time to prepare for a potential land-falling tropical storm or hurricane. Learn how with the daily tips.

News Article & Home Care Tips

Every Floridian knows the saying, "When thunder roars, go indoors." Since thunderstorms in Florida are as common as the sunrise and sunset, it's easy for many Sunshine State residents to ignore the rumbling in the sky and continue their everyday activities. How to Calculate the Distance of a Thunderstorm? The time between seeing a lightning flash and hearing the thunder it produces is a rough guide to how far away the lightning was when you heard it. Normally, you can hear thunder up to 10 miles from the lightning that makes it. Lightning heats the air around it to as much as 60,000 degrees, producing sound waves by the quick expansion of the heated air. Since light travels at 186,000 miles per second, you see the lightning the instant it flashes. But sound travels about a mile in five seconds (near the ground). If 15 seconds elapse between seeing a lightning bolt and hearing its thunder, the lightning was about three miles away when you heard it. If you calculate that lightning is closer than three miles away from you, go indoors. Successive lightning strikes are often two to three miles apart.

It is reassuring to many to know that someone will "keep an eye" on their home while they are away. Many people arrange to have someone perform weekly Home Watch visits. This is an inexpensive "insurance policy". However, special care should be taken when choosing a service provider to be sure that the person or company has a reputable background, and has been adequately trained in home inspections of this nature.

Nuclear Plant Leak Threatens Drinking Water Wells in Florida

When Florida's largest power company added two nuclear reactors to an existing plant that sat between two national parks - Biscayne Bay and the Everglades - the decision raised the concerns of environmentalists and some government officials about the possible effects on water quality and marine life. Now more than four decades later, Florida Power & Light's reactors at Turkey Point, built to satisfy the power needs of a booming Miami, are facing their greatest crisis. A recent study commissioned by the county concluded that Turkey Point's old cooling canal system was leaking polluted water into Biscayne Bay. Samples of the water at various depths and sites around the power plant showed elevated levels of salt, ammonia, phosphorous and tritium, a radioactive isotope that is found in nature but also frequently associated with nuclear power plants. The tritium, which was found in doses far too low to harm people, serves as a marker for scientists, enabling them to track the flow of canal water out from under the plant and into the bay. The tritium levels in December and January were much higher than they should be in ocean water.

News Article: Rainy Season

With thunderstorms already lining this weeks weather forecast, we can see that rainy season in Florida is once again upon us! South Florida's rainy season brings with it both good and not-so-good elements, and we have to prepare our homes for both. Throughout this timeframe, South Florida normally receives 26.78 inches - that's 70 percent of an entire year's rainfall! Additionally, one minute it can be a downpour and clear skies the next; or raining on your home but not on your neighbor's home across the street. This is Florida's rainy season - if you don't like the weather, just wait an hour; it will change. Because of the Florida landscape, flooding is a major problem, especially in South Florida. So, the first and most important thing you can do to prepare for the rainy season is to purchase or review your current flood and wind insurance policy for your home. You don't have to be in a flood zone to experience flooding - since 1978, South Florida's low-risk zones have become susceptible to flooding, incurring between 20 and 25 percent of all flood insurance claims. Such flooding happens from severe rains, hurricanes and water backup caused by inadequate or overloaded drainage systems and dam/levee failures.
